The University of Miami and LaLiga North America Partnership

University of Miami School of Education and Human Development undergraduate students, majoring and minoring in Sport Administration, travelled to Spain for a week-long immersive experience through a partnership with LaLiga Business School. During LaLiga Week, the 15 students in the program learned about LaLiga’s business strategy through a series of activities during their visit. They engaged with club professionals through a series of lectures, toured numerous stadiums, visited a sport performance training center for elite athletes, learned from leaders of a local non-profit soccer club, and attended a few matches, both in Madrid and Barcelona.

LaLiga North America will participate in the school’s Sport Administration M.S. Ed. program playing a key role in the curriculum. Read More on the SEHD News.

    • These positions are not guaranteed as the positions are open to all incoming Sport Administration graduate students (max of 30) for the 7-12 internship positions.

    • The internship positions are only offered on a yearly basis and start each fall term.

  • What is the course modality?

We have 2 programs options. One features all in person courses. The second is our online only program, which managed by UOnline.

  • How long does it take to complete the program?

The curriculum is designed to allow the completion of degree requirements in a 12- or 18-month period

  • Are there opportunities for students to gain practical experience?

Miami is a global sports city, and the University of Miami has connections throughout the industry with sport organizations looking for students to volunteer, intern, and work full-time. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in sports for the duration of their time in the program. Few communities in the U.S. offer such a wide spectrum of opportunities in sports. In addition to professional (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) and collegiate (UM & FIU) sports organizations being located in the South Florida area, numerous other organizations have major annual events scheduled throughout the year. Many of these organizations solicit UM student involvement through both paid and non-paid positions. As a result, UM students have access to multiple internship opportunities allowing them to establish a strong network of sport professionals upon graduation.

  • What makes the program unique?

The Sport Administration program at the University of Miami offers the best of all worlds: a private school education with small class sizes and personalized experiences, access to the vast Miami sports market and myriad opportunities to work in the sports and entertainment industry, and the ability to tap into and become part of the exclusive Miami Hurricanes alumni network with professionals and executives worldwide working at the highest levels of the business.

  • What are possible career opportunities?

Graduates who take advantage of the multiple field experience opportunities and their internship can build a strong professional portfolio preparing them to work in a wide range of positions within the sport industry. We have alumni working at all levels of sport and entertainment both domestically and globally. Our students are trained to work in any area that is at the intersection of sports and business. Some examples include working in the front offices of professional, intercollegiate, or high school sports, sport agency and representation, media/communications, sales and marketing, finance, operations, facilities and event management, human resources, public relations, community relations, and many others.

  • Are graduate assistantships available?

Graduate assistantships are not guaranteed upon admission to the program. The department awards assistantships to newly admitted students as funding becomes available.

  • Is there a faculty member, beyond the career center, who can provide the students about to graduate with information on job opportunities or give career advice about the industry?

Unlike many other programs, all of the UM Sport Administration faculty have experience in the sport industry at some point in their career prior to joining academia. Because of their ‘real world’ experiences they do advise and mentor graduating students.

  • Upon graduation, will having a degree in Sport Administration from UM impact the amount of money I can make with a career in the field?

Leveraging both your degree and practical field experiences, UM students can in some instances be in a strong position when negotiating a salary.

  • If I choose a career in Sport Administration, is there a chance I will get to work directly with the athletes?

The amount of contact any person in the industry has with athletes depends on the organization they work for.

  • Is Sport Administration a “practical” major, meaning that most of what I learn is information I will use in my daily work within that industry?

Yes. The program is based upon the principle that the aim of all learning is practical efficacy. In addition, the program requires field experience and an internship in the field which provides students with a practical application of what he/she has learned in the classroom.
